Everything You Need to Know About First Grade Mrs. Harris – Room 113 2021-2022 Arrival Students may arrive at school as early as 8:30 a.m. through Door 12 on Wabash Street. Students will be served breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. in Commons A. Students will be picked up at 8:45 a.m. for class. If your child arrives after 9:00 a.m., he/she will be marked tardy, and breakfast may not be available. Homework Homework will be distributed at the beginning of each week, and it will be due at the end of the week. Late homework will not be accepted. Please designate a plastic folder for all assignments to be transported to and from school daily. The folder should have prongs with two pockets. The folder pockets should be labeled return and keep home. All notes and assignments that need to be returned to school go in the return section. All class assignments and graded papers that should be emptied from the folder will go into the keep home section. Please check your child’s folder each night, assist with assignments, and remove items from the keep home pocket. Spelling and Vocabulary A spelling list will be distributed each week. Every Friday, students will be tested on their ability to spell the words. Please spend time reviewing the spelling words with your child each week. Vocabulary words will be introduced each week. Students will learn the definitions and use the words when they communicate orally and in writing. Students are not required to memorize the spellings for vocabulary words. Weekly Book Reports Students are expected to read a book of choice and complete a book report each week. If reading a chapter book, students can use the same book title to complete up to 2 book report forms in a month. Please assist your child in selecting books appropriate for his/her reading level. Resource Schedule Students receive an hour resource period each day from 12:45 to 1:45. Resource teachers will instruct students and provide resource grades. The resource schedule will change every five weeks. On your child’s scheduled gym day, the gym uniform should be worn under the regular school uniform. Students are not permitted to change in the bathrooms or locker rooms. Everyone changes in the classroom. Gym shoes may be worn to school! Dismissal If your child takes the bus, he/she will be escorted to the bus at 3:40. Please make sure your child knows his/her assigned bus route number. The bus route is indicated on a sign on the bus window marked “Beasley Bus Route #__.” Route numbers are from 1 - 25. If your child will be picked up, I will be dismissing students at 3:40 outside of Door 12 on Wabash Street. Please dress your child appropriately for the weather. Please communicate any changes in the regular pick-up procedures. Discipline Policy Students are expected to make good decisions and follow classroom rules to maintain a positive learning environment. Appropriate behavior is supported, with praise, rewards, and special activities. If students break rules, the following steps will be taken: 1st consequence Warning 2nd consequence Complete Refocus Form 3rd consequence Parent Teacher Conference 4th consequence Referral to the Dean Grading and Weighting Metrics A 90 -100 Classroom Assignments (40%) B 80 - 89 Homework (20%) C 70 - 79 Assessments (30%) D 60 - 69 Participation (10%) F 0 - 59 Please check ASPEN Parent Portal for up-to-date grades Communication Parents with questions or concerns can contact me via email at ajharris@cps.edu. I am also available from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. for online conferences via Google Meet. Field Trips Students may be invited to attend field trips. It is important that students have signed and returned permission slips along with the fees by the assigned due date. Money will not be accepted after that scheduled date and time.
